Were You Looking for Team Building?
Did you know that Einstein credited his violin playing with helping him solve complex problems?
Nobel Prize winners are 22x more likely than their peers to have creative hobbies!
“Sounds charming, but my team is not artistic at all.”
That’s the point!
The foundations of innovation are curiosity and exploration and we can activate those through artistic methodology.
Artistic methodology does not require artistic talent, it requires introducing play.
Think back to your own childhood, or your kids’ or grandkids’ imaginative play: Did you ever use the spindles of a dining chair to play “bank teller” or “grocery store”? Did you build miniature cities in the dirt using rocks, sticks and leaves? Did you ever try to dig the deepest hole at the beach just to see what you’d find?
All forms of play are predicated on curiosity and a sense of possibility and it’s that very sense of possibility that enables us to believe things could be different from how they are right now. And that’s the mindset we need to imagine new processes and different solutions.
As adults, most of us gradually and willingly drop play from our lives, dismissing it as frivilous and unnecessary. But that lack of play engenders apathy which we see at work when people claim systems feel too big or too entrenched to be improved. When we give ourselves and our employees permission to play, we ignite those creative pathways in the brain leading to a natural expansion of the ideas we imagine as possible.
Play -> Possibility = Innovation
