Exquisite Corpses

Surrealist artists of the early 20th century adapted the collaborative word game “Exquisite Corpses” to push the boundaries of realism and create some wild and wacky visual art. Just like the word-game, each addition to the “Exquisite Corpse” is made with the paper folded so that the full image isn’t revealed until everyone’s added something.
In this Church of Art workshop, we will make our Exquisite Corpses with a combination of collage, paint pens, markers, and colored pencils. The results are hilarious, charming, strange, sometimes thought-provoking, and always unexpected!
Fun fact:
While often depicted in visual art as a human form with folds between the head, the torso, legs, and feet, the name “Exquisite Corpse” actually originated from one of the game’s original literary versions that delivered the delightfully bizarre phrase: “The exquisite corpse will drink the new wine.”
