Church

of Art

A sanctuary for artists

Come as you are.
Make a mess.

CONNECT WITH OTHERS.
Feel HOPEFUL.

The Church of Art is not a cult (yet). The Church of Art is a secular, art-centered approach to creative community building.

There’s no critique and no need to be good at anything. Just show up, make a mess, and walk away with something cool that you created along with that sweet feeling of personal connection.

We offer recurring, low-pressure art hangs in the Portland, Oregon area (Raleigh Hills/Beaverton) for people who want to make stuff in the company of other humans–in real life–with snacks.

Rite of Contemplation

Portland Metro Area

Self-portraiture is an established practice in the history of visual arts and a “rite of contemplation” refers to practices designed to facilitate a state of deep reflection, stillness, or spiritual awareness.

Join artists Erika Halperin and Sarah Denae for two and a half hours of  creative, abstracted self-portrait making where we will explore three distinct media practices in sequence.

In this workshop, you will build your observational skills while letting go of the perfection we expect from realism.

What We’ll Use:

POSCA pens, charcoal, gouache, collage, and string.

You are:

  • An adult who’s into creativity and community-building.

  • More excited about creative prompts and artistic play than step-by-step instruction.

  • Open to a little art, a little chaos, and a group experience that doesn’t revolve around performance or outcome.

When:

Sunday, September 21st, 2025, 10am to 12:30pm

Where:

Raleigh West, near Jesuit High School (specific address available after registration)

Sketchbook de los Muertos

Portland Metro Area

Día de los Muertos is a pre-Hispanic indigenous celebration from more than 3000 years ago that acknowledges the intertwined relationship between life and death. The Americas’ indigenous people represented Día de los Muertos in murals, painted pottery, monuments, and artistic artifacts. Common visual elements include yellow marigolds, candles, photos of deceased loved ones, cut tissue-paper designs, skeletons, and sugar skulls.

In this workshop we will immerse ourselves in the bright colors and visual elements of this Mexican celebration, letting it inspire and guide our sketchbook play.

What We’ll Use:

Gouache, watercolor, POSCA pens, charcoal, colored pencils, fine-liner pens, pastels, Caran d’Ache crayons, Woodies, Art Graf blocks, and anything else that will leave a colorful mark on the page!

Revelation of Divine Pigments

Portland Metro Area

Have you wondered what the difference is between gouache and watercolor or how to use pastels or why so many artists are obsessed with Neocolors? Do you want to  uncover the ways of the Woodies, how to use acrylic inks in multi-media pieces, what magic there is in the mark of an Art Graf or the bold stroke of charcoal? Let our addiction to art supplies be your boon!

In this workshop, artist Erika Halperin will guide you through the exploration of one medium at a time as we discuss what the pigment is made of, how it works, and play with how it interacts with others. We will incorporate wax and tape resists (don’t worry, you’ll learn what that means!), mark-making with unusual objects, dry brushing, and experimenting with the introduction of salt and water.

We will then transform our colorful pages into small, delightful concertina books that you can take home and enjoy!

What We’ll Use:

Gouache, watercolor, graphite, gesso, POSCA pens, charcoal, colored pencils, Neocolors, Art-Graf blocks, fine-liner pens, pastels, crayons, Woodies, Acryl-gouache, alcohol markers, and anything else that will leave a mark or create a pattern.

You are:

  • An adult who’s into creativity and community-building.

  • Craving in-person community-building and meeting new people.
  • Excited about creative prompts and artistic play.
